What is it?

Asphalt shingles, also known as composite shingles, are made from a fiberglass base matting that is saturated in hot liquid asphalt. Mineral granules are applied to the surface to form a coating that increases fire resistance, protects the shingle from UV damage, and adds color to the finished product. Shingles are made in flat three tab, dimensional, and high profile styles that have one to three layers of material. Asphalt shingle products are also available with reinforced mat that adds impact resistance providing greater protection from hail and impact.
